Lila Beverly Spencer was born September 7,1932 at the former Morrisania Hospital in the Bronx New York.. Lila was the second child of three children born to the late Grace Crawford Spencer of Baltimore Maryland and the late George Spencer of Philadelphia PA. Lila was predeceased by her older sister Sylvia Elizabeth Spencer Williams. Lila was educated in the New York public school system but matriculated High School at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore Maryland. During her senior year she decided to move back to New York and get her high school diploma at Mary Walton High School in the Bronx, New York.
After graduating from high school, Lila worked briefly as a nurse's aide at a hospital in Roosevelt Island, New York. She then began a 40 year career with AT&T and during that 40 year span Lila went back to school. In 1973 she graduated with a Associates degree in Applied Science at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York. She also had various part time jobs within those years. Lila retired from AT&T in a management position in the early 1990's, but continued to work. Lila started a second career working with Dean Witter Investment Bank and continued her part time work at Lord and Taylor.
Affectionately known as Aunt Lila "aka LaLa" she was a hard working independent woman who loved family, traveling, and fashion. She had a savvy sense of style and loved shopping at high end stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor and Bloomingdales to name a few! Lila loved the finer things in life and inspired many young people to strive to be the best they could be by getting an education, working hard, saving money and never give up on your dreams!
Some of the places she traveled included, Italy and Spain, Alaska, various Caribbean Islands and Alaska. Lila did not have children of her own but treated her nieces and nephews with love and affection. Lila married Kenneth Frances in the mid 1970's and divorced in the early 1990's. In 1996 Lila decided to move to St. Petersburg, Florida after frequent trips there to visit her long time friend Bell. Lila lived the remainder of her life there.
Those who will cherish her fond memories are her family and many friends she leaves behind. One brother Irving B. Spencer, niece Karen Williams Brown, nephews Ronald Williams, Richard Williams, Craig Spencer and Kenneth Spencer. Great nieces, Tyesha Samuel, Tahmia Brown, Kristen Spencer, Lindsey Spencer, and Chloe Williams. Great nephews Geron Williams, Justin
Spencer, Terrill Williams, Jamal Williams and Kai Williams. Also two niece in-laws, Karen Williams and Nina Spencer. As well as a host of great grand nieces and nephews. 1 Aunt, Kitty Spencer, many cousins and numerous friends. Lila will be missed.
